Glenwood Hills: Protecting Our Community Together
From May GHNA Meeting 5/19/2026
Recent wildfires across New Mexico serve as an important reminder that preparedness starts at home. As part of GHNA’s ongoing efforts to keep our community informed, neighbors recently gathered to learn from local fire and emergency response professionals about wildfire risks and practical steps we can take to protect our homes and neighborhood.

According to the 2022 Bernalillo County Community Wildfire Protection Plan, Glenwood Hills/Kachina Hills is identified as a high wildfire risk area due to its location along the Sandia foothills. While our beautiful setting offers incredible views and access to nature, it also means we must be proactive about wildfire mitigation.

What Can Homeowners Do?
Small actions can make a big difference:
Create defensible space by removing dead vegetation and maintaining landscaping around your home.
Keep roofs and gutters clean of leaves and pine needles.
Trim tree branches away from roofs, decks, and structures.
Use fire-resistant materials when replacing roofs, siding, windows, or fencing.
Prepare an evacuation plan and know multiple routes out of the neighborhood.
Sign up for emergency alerts through Bernalillo County.
Wildfires are often spread by wind-driven embers that can travel long distances, making home hardening and defensible space critical—even for homes not directly adjacent to open space.
Community Preparedness Matters
Protecting Glenwood Hills is a shared responsibility. When neighbors work together to reduce wildfire risk, the entire community becomes safer and more resilient.
GHNA extends its thanks to our local fire and emergency personnel for sharing their expertise and helping educate residents about wildfire preparedness.
